On the 31st of August, a series of posts on Instagram disrupted the timelines of many gays nostalgic for bawling sessions to Our Lady of Yearning, Carly Rae Jepsen, during alcohol-fueled nights when Covid-19 was just a string of numbers and letters that could pass for a strong password.
Spread across nine posts were portions of an iconic illustration by Dex Fernandez, also known as Garapata, of an equally-iconic establishment, described by Preen as an "underground safe space for the LGBTQ+ community."
It was TodayxFuture's facade at its old location in Cubao.
TodayxFuture, also known as TxF or just Future among its regulars, was a queer-friendly nightclub in Quezon City that was among the casualties of the pandemic.
It is so dearly missed by its patrons, so much so that when Future updated its Instagram nearly a month ago, gleeful rumors circulated that the club might just make a comeback.
"Babalik ka na ba?" Artego creator Iko Salas asked on X, posting a screenshot of Future's Instagram account.
"Ayoko umasa 😭" replied X user @MarcusMola14.
On one of the posts by Future on Instagram, user @daryllsambat pleaded, "ayosen mo lang bakla !!!!"
For once and for all, aayosen na po.
Mamser got in touch with Sharon Atillo, one of Future's founders, who had this to say about the rumors and the people who are craving for Future's return: "Sabi lang ni Debbie 'The future belongs to the future itself' so maybe that’s the answer 😅😂"
It's cryptic, but also seems to suggest that Future is not just the establishment, but its patrons as well.
As we await for more word on Future's future, we'll have to keep dancing on our own.
